BC Ferries has a zero tolerance policy for passengers drinking alcohol or using drugs on its ships or terminals.

Over the Canada Day long weekend the ferry corporation dealt with seven different incidents of passengers under the influence.

BC Ferries takes reports of persons suspected of operating their vehicles under the influence seriously and works with local police to bring the offence to the attention of the authorities.

Terminal work begins

BC Ferries is advising its passengers headed to Texada Island and Comox that though they may notice work being started on the Westview berth, ferry service will not be affected this summer.

The ferry corporation issued a service notice that it will start construction on the terminal July 15.

The construction activities will include pile drilling and driving and will be performed throughout the project between the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Alternate hours may be required and would be dependent on tidal activity.

BC Ferries' public affairs manager Darin Guenette said that the ferry corporation is planning to keep the terminal operating normally until Jan. 12, 2014.

"There'll be at least six months of activity and it won't affect operations," he said.

The upgraded terminal is scheduled to reopen March 9, 2014.
