A woman was airlifted to hospital on Monday, Aug. 31 following a single-car accident near Trout Lake.

First responders were called at approximately 1:30 p.m. after witnesses driving behind her saw the car drift over the centre line, hit a turn sign “and fly off into a ravine full of thick brush,” said Sunshine Coast RCMP Const. Karen Whitby.

RCMP believe the 67-year-old fell asleep at the wheel of her Toyota Matrix.

Emergency Health Services and the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department helped rescue the driver from the 30-metre embankment.

The woman was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital shortly after the accident for non-life-threatening injuries. No impairment was detected.

The accident occurred approximately one kilometre west of Trout Lake in the 8600 block of the Sunshine Coast Highway. The woman was the only person in the car.
