Mathew Wilson has been acclaimed as the Liberal MLA candidate for Powell River-Sunshine Coast.

“My primary focus for the region will be on coastal economic development, affordable housing, and transportation infrastructure,” he said after accepting the candidacy on Nov. 12 in Davis Bay.

“It’s time to bring people together and find common ground to achieve results for the constituents of this riding, who for too long have been under-represented in Victoria.”

Wilson is the son of former Liberal leader Gordon Wilson, who served the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding from 1991 to 2001, and stepson of Judi Tyabji, former Liberal MLA for the Okanagan-East riding.

“We are really proud that our son Mathew Wilson has decided to follow in his father Gordon F.D. Wilson’s footsteps and seek to serve the residents of Powell River-Sunshine Coast,” Tyabji wrote on Wilson’s Facebook page. “He’s a hard worker, like his dad, and I hope people will give him a chance to earn their vote!”

Wilson said the time spent with his father in politics taught him a lot.

“I know the riding, I know the history, and from a young age travelling with my father, I learned how to listen to voters. I also learned how important it is as MLA to be a strong advocate for their concerns,” Wilson said. “In the past 15 years I have worked in the civil service. I know how government works and I know how to get results for my constituents.”

Wilson lives in Roberts Creek with his two children and currently works with B.C. First Nations on economic development opportunities in B.C.’s resource sector.
