West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country member of Parliament John Weston moderated a roundtable involving regional media and the Honourable Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Rob Nicholson on Aug. 2.

Nicholson mentioned such achievements as increasing sentences for gun-related crimes; the repeal of the "Faint Hope Clause," which permitted prisoners to apply for early parole after 15 years in prison; and the "two-for-one sentencing credit," which granted two-for-one jail-time credit for time spent in pre-sentence custody. He also discussed the government's justice priorities for the fall, which include taking further measures against sexual predators and drug traffickers.

"Our Government is committed to standing up for law-abiding Canadians," said Nicholson.

Weston's recently-enacted Bill C-475, "Tackling Crystal Meth and Ecstasy," arose during the discussion.

"Minister Nicholson was supportive all the way," said Weston.

Bill C-475 was one of only six Private Member's Bills to become law last session.
