Weekly police report

Sunshine Coast RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Feb. 10 to 16:

Dog bite/grow op/fight

• On Feb. 11, a report of a dog-biting incident was made from Kinnikinnick Park after a resident walking along the trails came upon a male walking two dogs on leash and three dogs off leash.

One of the on-leash dogs bit the resident on the leg before the owner left the scene. The resident was able to note the licence plate of the dog owner and police warned the owner about maintaining control of his animals in public. The matter has been forwarded to the District of Sechelt bylaw officer.

• On Feb. 15, police were called to a residence in Halfmoon Bay for a report of a neighbour dispute.

One neighbour had a medicinal marijuana grow operation at his residence, and the other neighbour had resorted to videotaping the activities of his neighbour.

Police understand the frustrations people who live near a legal grow operation may have, however residents are reminded to ensure they are not putting themselves at risk of civil or criminal liability through their own actions.

• During the evening of Feb. 15, police were called to Gibsons establishment after two intoxicated females were causing a disturbance, throwing food around, and threatening staff when they were asked to leave.

Police attended and arrested the females, who were apologetic and said they had no intention of following through on their threats. The females were later released from custody. No charges will be recommended.

Break and enters/theft

• Early on Feb. 10, police responded to a commercial alarm in the 4300 block of Highway 101 in Sechelt.

The alarm was triggered when an unknown suspect attempted to smash a window to gain access into a building. The suspect did not manage to gain entry and nothing was taken. The file is still under investigation.

• Between Feb. 3 and 10, a thief gained access to an unsecured shed in the 5600 block of Xenichan Avenue in Sechelt, stealing a grey and silver pocket bike and a Honda 2500 generator, which was red and black with a blue replacement fuel tank zap-strapped to the frame.

• On Feb. 10, a suspect gained entry to an unlocked vehicle parked in the 6400 block of Shoreline Place in Sechelt, and rifled through the glove box and centre console. Many items were left scattered within the vehicle's interior, but it doesn't appear that anything was stolen.

• Overnight on Feb. 12, a break and enter occurred at a business on Mason Road in Sechelt.

Staff noticed jerry cans and a fuel nozzle left on the ground beside a fuel tank, and it is believed an amount of fuel was stolen. The thieves removed a gate to gain access to the business through an adjoining property. The file is still under investigation.

Traffic incidents

• On Feb. 11, police attended to a motor vehicle incident involving a cyclist on Highway 101 and Snodgrass Road in Sechelt.

The northbound vehicle passed the cyclist and slowed to make a right turn onto Snodgrass Road and the cyclist struck the front right bumper. The cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The file is still under investigation.

• During the evening of Feb. 13, police stopped a car on Reed Road in Gibsons, after it was observed speeding relative to the road conditions, and had aftermarket headlights. Upon speaking with the driver, the officer immediately noted the odour of fresh marijuana. The driver and passenger were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, and an amount of marijuana was located and seized during a search of the vehicle.

• Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 14, police pulled over a vehicle for speeding on Highway 101 near Gibsons. The driver had an odour of liquor on his breath, slurred speech, and admitted he had consumed liquor. Two tests were administered on a roadside-screening device, and both resulted in ‘fail’ readings. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
