Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Jan. 27 to Feb. 2:
Mischief
• On Jan. 29, police were dispatched to the 5600 block of Cowrie Street in Sechelt after a caller reported a group of youth on the roof of a nearby business.
Upon arrival, police noticed a male crouched behind a dumpster at the rear of the business. As police approached, the male stood up holding a crossbow in his hand. The male advised he'd found the bow in the dumpster. Police determined the item to be a small cross bow with a working trigger and seized it for destruction as a weapon dangerous to the public.
“Police remind the public of how important it is to ensure that if you come into contact with a police officer and have anything in your hand that could be portrayed as a weapon, you listen to police direction,” said media relations officer Const. Harrison Mohr. “Police often have only a split second to consider whether or not someone poses an imminent threat, and thankfully that was not the case in this instance.”
• Overnight on Jan. 30, several unlocked vehicles on St. Andrews Place in Sechelt were rummaged through. The intruder did not cause any damage and nothing was taken. Police recommend locking your vehicles, and also suggest the use of motion lights to scare away would-be thieves in dark areas.
Traffic incidents
• On Jan. 27, police initiated a traffic stop after witnessing an unlicenced driver in a vehicle on Highway 101 near Seaview Lane in Sechelt.
The lone driver was issued an unlicenced driver prohibition, a violation ticket for failing to drive with a licence and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.
• On Jan. 28, police attended a single-vehicle accident on Garden Bay Road near the Pender Harbour landfill after passers-by reported a vehicle on its side.
It appears the vehicle was travelling eastbound and lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The vehicle drifted over to the right and hit the ditch with such force the vehicle flew back onto the roadway and flipped over onto the driver's side. Fortunately, the driver did not sustain any serious injuries.
Police are still investigating why the driver lost control. The matter has been referred to ICBC.
• A possible impaired driver was reported westbound on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek on Jan. 28 after a witness reported the vehicle swerving and driving erratically.
Police located the vehicle, and determined the driver was not impaired. However, during the traffic stop, a second vehicle drove by at high speed. The officer let the first driver go to pull over the second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle exhibited signs of intoxication and admitted to having consumed alcohol recently. After two "warn" results on a roadside-screening device, the driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed.
• On Jan. 29, police witnessed a vehicle disobey a stop sign at Lower Road and Roberts Creek Road. Police initiated a traffic stop and determined that a month prior, the driver had received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver was issued an appearance notice with a court date for prohibited driving and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Break and enter/theft
• Overnight on Jan. 27, an attempted break and enter occurred at a building in the 4700 block of Highway 101 in Sechelt.
An unknown suspect smashed an outside window frame and attempted to push the double-pane window inward, possibly to reach the lock on the inside. No actual entry was gained and no other damage or theft was reported.
• On Jan. 25, four male youths entered a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101 and one of them stole a Beats speaker. The suspect was wearing light jeans, a black hoodie with white strings and a white shirt.
Police are reviewing security camera footage in the course of its investigation.
