Weekly police report

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Jan. 13 to 20:

• Overnight on Jan. 13, a thief stole a blue "Port-a-Boat" rubber dinghy from a marina in the 1500 block of Field Road in Wilson Creek.

The dinghy was tied up to a sailboat and contained a new set of oars inside. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 and reference file 15-236.

• Sometime between Jan. 6 and 9, a thief stole a fuel pump from a business in the 5800 block of Black Bear Road in Sechelt. The pump is made by GPI and is capable of pumping 25 gallons of fuel per minute. A fuel hose and electrical connections for a battery were attached to the pump as well. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP and reference file 15-238.

• Sometime between Jan. 1 to 13, thieves gained entry to addresses in the 4300 and 4400 block of Hilltop Road by breaking a lock on a gate. The thieves then damaged a door on a trailer, but were unsuccessful in gaining entry. However, they did steal an undetermined number of copper reels; it appears they also attempted to steal an old boat motor and a number of anti-theft silver wires.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and continuing to investigate.

• On Jan. 15, police attended a single-vehicle accident on Highway 101 at Madeira Park Road. The driver advised that he had been driving southbound when he lost control on a corner and went off road into a ditch. The vehicle flipped end-over-end and was demolished. Fortunately, the driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own and only sustained minor cuts.

Police noted the poor condition of the tires on the vehicle and issued the driver a violation ticket for the bald tires. The vehicle was towed and the matter has been referred to ICBC.

• On Jan. 15, a lost ring was reported in Roberts Creek. The ring is described as a three gold rings bonded together; one ring is antique gold with gemstones, the second is white gold with two smaller diamonds flanking a solitaire diamond and the third is a white gold diamond studded wedding band.

Anyone with any information about this ring is asked to contact RCMP and reference file 15-294.

• On Jan. 15, an attempted theft was reported at a business in the 5500 block of Highway 101 in Sechelt, after a staff member witnessed the suspect slip an expensive item under his shirt. The staff member questioned the suspect who fled the store. The staff member followed him outside and managed to recover the stolen item as the suspect fled on foot. The file is still under investigation.

• A wallet was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the parking lot of Trail Bay Mall during the afternoon of Jan. 17. Police are reviewing surveillance footage of the area, and remind residents that thieves are much less likely to target locked vehicles.

• During the early evening hours of Jan. 17, a resident reported seeing a vehicle in Gibsons braking erratically, and repeatedly driving over the fog (shoulder) line. The resident suspected the driver might be impaired.

Police followed up with the owner of the suspect vehicle, and determined she was not impaired, but said she has difficulty seeing when it is dark and raining. As this driver has been reported multiple times before for similar issues, police have asked the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles to review her medical fitness to drive.

• On Jan. 17, staff at a Sechelt business called police after an intoxicated male, who had been caught stealing the week before, refused to leave the store.

The male was located outside the store by police, and arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. The male became belligerent and confrontational, and threatened to assault police. He was held in custody until sober, and later released on a Promise to Appear in court.
