Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Jan. 6 to 13:

• On Jan. 6, a bracelet found near the Sechelt post office was turned into the detachment. Owner may claim with detailed description, reference file 15-111.

• Between Jan. 2 and 7, a thief gained entry into a business in the 600 block of School Road in Gibsons, and stole a large amount of frozen meat. The thief appears to have gained access by reaching through an unlocked window to unlock a door.

The file is still under investigation.

• On Jan. 7, a witness reported an aggressive driver northbound on Highway 101 at Leek Road in Roberts Creek after the suspect vehicle tailgated one vehicle and then crossed a double solid line to pass it plus a second vehicle.

The witness was able to provide the vehicle information as well as a photo of the car and driver to police. Police located the driver and issued him a violation ticket for drive without due care and attention.

• Overnight on Jan. 9, a thief removed and stole a 12,000-pound power pull “Smitty Bilt Winch” and an “Iron Cross” push bar bumper from a vehicle parked in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue in Sechelt.

Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 and reference file 15-166.

• On Jan. 9 a Coast resident reported being scammed after being befriended on Facebook by an unknown male suspect.

The suspect convinced the resident that he needed financial assistance for a good cause and after sending the resident a fraudulent scanned image of his passport to "prove" his identity, the resident wired a large sum of money to a third party at the suspect's request.

A second large sum was wired to different third party a few days later, again at the suspect's request. The suspect then requested another large sum of money at which point the resident grew suspicious. When the resident voiced these concerns, the suspect became even more demanding. The file is still under investigation.

• On Jan. 9, a Supercycle bike, found in the 5600 block of Inlet Avenue in Sechelt, was turned in to police. Owner may claim with detailed description, reference file 15-175.

• On Jan. 10, a resident witnessed a vehicle with no plates squealing its tires, doing burn-outs, and fishtailing down Farnham Road in Gibsons.

Police located and stopped the suspect vehicle as it was speeding and driving dangerously in the area, which had heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic at the time. The Class 7 driver did not have his driver's licence on him, nor was his temporary operating permit visible through the dark tint of the rear window. The driver was issued violation tickets for fail to produce driver's licence, drive without consideration and a notice of prohibition of driving for 15 days for the dangerous stunting. The vehicle was also impounded for seven days.

• On Jan. 11, hikers in Smuggler's Cove in Halfmoon Bay, reported spotting a cougar at the southern end of the peninsula. The cougar apparently approached the hikers, but in a non-aggressive manner and when the hikers made noise the cougar ran away. The Conservation Service Office was advised.

• During the afternoon of Jan. 11, a thief smashed the driver's side window of a vehicle parked in the 5300 block of Snodgrass Road in Sechelt, and stole the faceplate of a stereo. No other items were stolen and no other damage was reported.

• Around 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 12, police dealt with a suspicious incident after a witness reported seeing a young male trying a key in various mail boxes located on Marine Way at Trail Avenue in Sechelt.

The male tried several boxes until he was successful in opening one with the key. The male then tried opening a few more boxes, unsuccessfully, before walking away. Police made extensive patrols for the Caucasian male, described as about 18 years-old, five feet six inches tall with a slim build, but did not locate him.

The male was wearing a white sweater with a red and black logo on the front, blue jeans and a backwards baseball cap. The mailboxes, which are not well marked with numbers, did not appear to have been tampered with or damaged. All residents are reminded to be aware of any mail that appears to be missing or tampered with.
