Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Aug.

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Aug. 2 to 9:

A savvy Coast resident avoided being scammed after receiving a recorded call purportedly from a well-known local business advising her that she or a friend or family member had entered her name in a contest and that she had won a trip for four to Cancun.

In order to claim the prize, she was advised to press "one" on her telephone pad. Fortunately, the resident hung up, and called the local business herself and confirmed the fraudulent call.

This is a popular scam and residents are again warned not to respond to such calls unless they are certain about its authenticity.

Sometime between Aug. 6 and 7, suspect(s) broke into a residence in the 5700 block of East Porpoise Bay Road by smashing a window with a brick to gain entry. The thieves stole a large variety of woodworking tools including a Black and Decker table saw, Mastercraft planer, a mitre saw, a Makita drill and a credit card. Also stolen was a distinctive Tibetan statue, approx. 12 to 14 inches high of a male figure with a bull's head, with a halo of fire behind him. The statue is very elaborate and detailed.

Police attended to a motor vehicle accident in the 800 block of Gibsons Way after a vehicle collided into a brick pillar. The elderly male driver advised the business owner he'd hit the gas instead of the brake, and gave his contact information, but left the scene before police arrived. Police will be contacting the driver and determining if driver testing is required.

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 101 near Burton Road after a southbound motorcycle rear-ended a vehicle stopped to make a left turn. No one was injured, but the motorcycle had to be towed due to accident damage.

On Aug. 2, a thief stole a bag from the luggage drop at the Langdale ferry terminal. Police are reviewing surveillance footage.

A motor-vehicle accident occurred in the 4700 block of Highway 101 after a southbound vehicle, which was witnessed driving erratically and drifting to the right, pulled hard to the right and struck a parked vehicle full-on. The elderly driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital and both vehicles had to be towed. A medical review for the driver is being requested.

On Aug. 3, a thief stole cash from an unsecured purse in a public facility in the 5500 block of Shorncliffe Avenue while the owner was distracted nearby.

A single vehicle accident occurred on Twin Creeks Road after a vehicle slipped while travelling on the windy gravel road and went into a ditch. The driver sustained moderate, but non-life threatening head injuries and was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital. The vehicle was heavily damaged. Alcohol was not a factor and no violation ticket will be issued.

A motorcyclist was caught on radar speeding more than double the posted limit northbound on Reed Road near Park Road. An officer stopped the motorcycle driver and issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and impounded the motorcycle for seven days.

A hit and run accident occurred in the 4300 block of Highway 101 after a vehicle was witnessed hitting a parked vehicle and then leaving the scene without leaving a note. The witness was able to take down the suspect vehicle's licence plate number. Police will be following up with the suspect vehicle's registered owner to issue a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene.
