Weekly police report

On Sept. 6, RCMP attended the areas of Surf Circle, High Tide and Salmon Drive areas of Sechelt where it was determined that a total of 14 vehicles were broken into sometime over night. Several of the vehicles were left unlocked by their owners.

Several of the vehicles were left unlocked by their owners. Thieves appeared to have been targeting banking documents and loose change. Police are warning local residents to lock their vehicles and not to leave valuable items in their vehicles including change. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Const. Ellerbrok at 604-885-2266.

RCMP will be increasing their patrols and targetting drunk drivers for the start of the school year. There will be zero tolerance for liquor and motor vehicle infractions including driving while impaired. Sunshine Coast RCMP would like to remind parents and young adults to make responsible decisions around pre-graduation celebrations.

A thief stole a Sirius satellite radio unit from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 6600 block of Sunshine Coast Highway. A second unlocked vehicle on the property was also rifled through, but nothing further was taken.

A witness reported a possibly impaired driver leaving a business in the 5700 block of Sunshine Coast Highway. The witness provided the licence plate, vehicle description and driver description, and also followed the suspect vehicle to another business in the 5500 block of Sunshine Coast Highway, where a RCMP member was able to locate the driver. The driver was found to be intoxicated and will be investigated for driving while impaired.

On Sept. 3, a male suspect, accompanied by a female, driving an older model boxy brown van with a white stripe, was caught on surveillance stealing a Landa pressure washer from a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. Anyone with any information is asked to contact RCMP reference file 09-6456.

A witness called in to report a possible impaired driver after the driver almost struck a child while trying to park at an address in the 6500 block of Norwest Bay Road. A vehicle licence plate, description and driver description were provided, and RCMP members located the suspected driver still on scene. The driver admitted to drinking earlier that evening. The vehicle was towed, and the driver was transported back to the detachment where testing showed impairment. The file is still under investigation.

A female driver in a gold coloured mini-van backed into a vehicle parked in the 900 block of Gibsons Way on Sept. 5 then quickly left the area without stopping even though she'd caused some minor damage. An occupant in the hit vehicle was unable to take down a licence plate number.

A resident in the 1400 block of Sunshine Coast Highway witnessed two young males steal some garden accessories from her yard and run into a nearby residence. Police located the suspects who admitted to the theft and dumping the items nearby. The suspects retrieved the stolen items and returned them to the owner, with apologies.

A homeowner reported a mother bear and three cubs on the rear balcony of his house in the 5800 block of Marine Way and in a tree in the front yard. The bears had moved on by the time RCMP members arrived, but the members noticed garbage strewn throughout the property. Everyone is reminded to keep their garbage stored properly until pick up day, and to make sure any tree fruits are picked before they become an attractant to bears.
