The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is seeking applications for the 2016 Waste Reduction Initiatives Program (WRIP). The program provides a total of $5,000 in financial assistance to Sunshine Coast based community groups, non-profit societies, registered charitable organizations and school groups for projects that contribute to waste reduction.
The Program was introduced to support the initiatives of the SCRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan.
Project categories considered for the WRIP include: business waste reduction, community reuse and repair, composting, construction and demolition waste reduction, reuse and recycling, food waste reduction, green waste reduction and recycling initiatives.
In 2015, five organizations across the Sunshine Coast received funding. The projects included: a community canning kitchen, an annual fruit tree harvesting program, improvement to existing waste separation bins at the Roberts Creek Library and Hall, a Green Cone food scrap digester pilot program, and an education and awareness-raising event that included a composting workshop to address green waste dumping in Langdale.
“These innovators are implementing unique, alternative ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste in our community,” said Robyn Cooper, SCRD manager of Solid Waste Services.
All applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25. Successful applicants will be announced in early December. Projects must be completed, including final report, by Dec. 1, 2017.
