Vigil for victims

Quebec Shooting

Update Feb. 3: Organizers have informed Coast Reporter that the vigil planned for Fri, Feb. 3 has been postponed until Feb. 10 because of the snow storm.  Location and time will be the same.

Original story: Sunshine Coasters are being invited to join a vigil for the victims of the shooting at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec. Six people were killed and several others wounded Jan. 29 when a gunman opened fire during evening prayers at the mosque in the Quebec City suburb of Sainte Foy.

Rev. Wendy Read of St. John’s United Church has been working to coordinate the vigil with other faith leaders on the Coast.

“We don’t want it to be a protest, we want it to be a vigil,” she said. “It seems that hatred knows no borders, and we want to gather and say, ‘Guess what, love knows no borders either,’ so we’re coming together to do what we can to support one another.”

The vigil will be held at Mission Point Park in Sechelt at noon Friday, Feb 3.
