One youth was arrested Monday morning, Sept. 7 after a vehicle was torched during what police described as a local grad party in Roberts Creek.

Around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Sunshine Coast RCMP and the Roberts Creek fire department responded to a report of a vehicle on fire off of the B&K Logging Road.

"It was determined that a local grad party was taking place in this area and a group of students set the vehicle on fire," said Cpl. Steve Chubey. "It is undetermined at this time who the registered owner of the vehicle is. Police were unable to identify the vehicle due to the extent of the fire damage."

According to Chubey, approximately 25 intoxicated youths were found in possession of copious amounts of alcohol.

"Parents were called in order to ensure the youths did not attempt to drive home while intoxicated," said Chubey. "Two youths from this grad party were found to be driving while impaired by alcohol. 24-hour driving suspensions were issued to both youths. One youth was arrested due to public intoxication."

Chubey is advising local youth that parties such as the one that occurred on Monday will not be tolerated and will be strictly enforced by police.

"This irresponsible behaviour displayed on this night puts the whole community at risk, not only from forest fires, but from impaired drivers as well," added Chubey.
