Sechelt council has given the green light to some early-morning construction work at the intersection of Trail Avenue and Cowrie Street.

Maycon, the main contractor on the $6-million Trail Avenue upgrade, needed a variance to the noise bylaw to allow work using heavy equipment between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on June 15 and 16.

Sanath Bandara, the district’s manager of engineering, told council June 10 that the variance allowing an early start would allow Maycon to  “minimize traffic disruption and the inconvenience to the public at the Cowrie Street-Trail Ave intersection and complete the project as soon as possible.”

Access to the Trail Bay Centre from Trail Avenue will be limited during the work, which Bandara said the contractor hopes to complete by June 19, as long as the weather cooperates.

The Trail Avenue project, which began earlier this year, has already been delayed by about a month following the discovery of archeological artifacts on Feb. 7 during work to install a storm sewer line in the area north of the downtown core.
