UPDATED: Crews attend to fire on Nelson Island

Fire crews now have a small wildfire that flared up Tuesday afternoon on Nelson Island under control. The fire, near Annis Bay on the island’s southern slopes, was visible from the Earls Cove ferry landing.

Fire crews now have a small wildfire that flared up Tuesday afternoon on Nelson Island under control.

The fire, near Annis Bay on the island’s southern slopes, was visible from the Earls Cove ferry landing.

According to the Coastal Fire Centre, the fire was contained to about 0.6 hectares after of one officer, one initial attack crew of three and two helicopters were brought in.

Fire information officer Marg Drysdale said the water bucketing from the helicopters knocked the fire down very quickly and crews continued Wednesday to monitor the situation.

Drysdale said the fire was person caused, but the precise cause is still under investigation.
