The Sunshine Coast Labour Council is hosting the annual Labour Day Picnic at Dougall Park in Gibsons, noon until 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3, with free food, music and speeches from dignitaries and local labour leaders.

Area unions are holding two Labour Day events on Sept. 3 this year.

Unifor split from the Canadian Labour Congress in January, and the Sunshine Coast Labour Council, which is part of the Congress, said it was agreed locally to hold separate events.

Unifor, which is marking its fifth anniversary this Labour Day, will be holding a kids catch-and-release fishing derby organized by locals 1119 and 466.

The event will take place at the pier at Friendship Park on Trail Bay in Sechelt from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday.

The fishing derby is for children 13 and under, but the entire community is invited to come out to watch and enjoy free hot dogs and refreshments.

Children taking part in the fishing derby will have to provide their own gearĀ  and wear a lifejacket.

The Sunshine Coast Labour Council, meanwhile, is hosting the annual Labour Day Picnic at Dougall Park in Gibsons, which will run from noon until 4 p.m. on Monday.

The Labour Day picnic features free food, music and speeches from dignitaries and local labour leaders.
