Four people and a family dog escaped injury in a house fire in Roberts Creek on Monday afternoon, Aug. 31.

A single-storey house near Highway 101 in the 2500 block went up in flames just after 1 p.m.

Sunshine Coast RCMP attended along with fire departments from Roberts Creek and Gibsons.

RCMP Cpl. Murray McNeil said the family were alerted to the fire due to a smoke detector that sounded.

Roberts Creek fire Chief Bruce Searle said the fire is not suspicious and the cause has yet to be determined by fire officials.

Although, according to McNeil, investigators spoke with residents of the home and determined a candle has been left unattended in a bedroom in the home next to an open window.

Searle said when firefighters arrived on scene, the bedroom wing of the house was fully involved, but the major structure of the house was saved thanks to the quick actions of fire crews. Searle said the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes of the first truck arriving on scene.

"They family will probably re-build," said Searle. "The home is not a total loss. The contents are a total loss. If they were not effected directly by the fire, then the smoke and heat damage was enough."

RCMP closed Highway 101 for approximately one hour and diverted traffic onto Lower Road as firefighters worked at the scene.
