Sunshine Coast RCMP say two people in their early 70s had to be airlifted to hospital in Vancouver after their car was involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Roberts Creek on Sunday, Dec. 1.
Const. Karen Whitby said RCMP were called out around 1:40 p.m., and fire and ambulance crews were already on the scene when police arrived.
Whitby said it appears a driver in a large pickup was trying to stop to let an oncoming car turn left onto Marlene Road, but had a problem with his brakes and in manoeuvring to avoid the turning car, collided with an oncoming Fiat.
The driver and passenger in the Fiat, a man and woman in their early 70s, were both airlifted to hospital in Vancouver to be treated for fractures.
The highway was closed between Marlene and Flume Road for about an hour.
RCMP also dealt with two less serious accidents on Sunday.
Later that afternoon there was a two-vehicle collision at Norwest Bay Road and Nickerson Road in West Sechelt.
Although nobody was hurt, Whitby said a five-year-old child in one of the vehicles was quite shaken and upset by the experience, so one of the RCMP officers at the scene gave him a “comfort bear,” which helped the boy calm down.
Whitby said officers keep the plush toys on hand when they’re on patrol and have to respond to calls where children are involved.
And late Sunday night, RCMP were dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Sunshine Coast Highway and the Carlson Forest Service Road in Halfmoon Bay. The driver reported hitting an icy patch, losing control and going off the road.
A tow truck was called to get the vehicle back on the road and the driver, who was not injured, was able to drive it away. Whitby said RCMP had Capilano Highways came out to salt the road.
