Two high school students from School District No. 46 participating in apprenticeship programs have received $1,000 awards from the Ministry of Education.

Recent graduates Mikaly Newton and Tyler Muryn were this year’s recipients of the Youth Work in Trades Award.

To win the awards, they had to spend 1,000 hours working as apprentices, they must have graduated from high school with a C+ average in their Grade 12 courses and were required to take four Work in Trades courses. Chatelach grad Muryn took an auto service course and Newton, who was enrolled in distance education, took a cooking course through SD46.

Newton spent his apprenticeship with Sheer Bliss Bakery Café and is now apprenticing with Drift Restaurant. Muryn apprenticed with South Coast Ford Dealership.

“We’re really proud of these students in receiving this award,” said SD46 career coordinator Cathy Gordon.
