Sechelt council candidate Michael Turner asked to withdraw from the municipal election race on Nov. 3, but it might not be that easy.

“The request is being forwarded to the Minister who may or may not allow the candidate to withdraw, depending on the timing of the election,” said Margi Nicholas, chief election officer for Sechelt in an email response to local media on Tuesday afternoon. “With advance voting scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, November 5, it is not possible to remove the candidate’s name from the ballot.”

Later in the afternoon, Nicholas said the District would get an answer from the

Minister to decide their next steps by Friday.

When contacted for comment, Turner would not go into specific details as to why he was withdrawing from the race only to say, “Yes, I am withdrawing from the race for very real private and personal reasons.”
