Transit drivers back to work in West Van

Blue Bus Strike

West Vancouver bus drivers were back on the job Tuesday morning after a one-day strike that shut down Blue Bus service in the area and left some Sunshine Coast commuters seeking other options to and from Horseshoe Bay.

Drivers in the Amalgamated Transit Union penned a tentative deal with the District of West Vancouver late Monday night.

The union had been without a contract since March 31 and talks for a new agreement had broken down on Oct. 23, leading to the one-day strike.

The tentative deal was expected to be ratified by the union, through a vote scheduled for this Thursday, Oct. 27, past Coast Reporter deadline this week.

In addition to serving West Vancouver, the Blue Bus has runs that connect with the Horseshoe Bay ferry and take walk-on passengers into the city. While the strike was on, passengers in Horseshoe Bay had two other busing options to consider.

The Sunshine Coast Connector offers daily service into the city for ferry passengers who catch the 12:20 p.m. sailing out of Langdale.

Lana Zanazovsky, with the Sunshine Coast Connector, said foot passengers can board the bus once on the 12:20 p.m. ferry and take it to one of three stops – Park Royal Mall, the waterfront station or Pacific Central Station.

The bus returns, starting with pickup at Pacific Central Station at 1:45 p.m., for the scheduled boarding of the 3:30 p.m. ferry out of Horseshoe Bay. Learn more at www.sunshinecoastconnector.ca

Also offering daily service between Horseshoe Bay and Pacific Central Station is Tofino Bus with daily departures from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal at 8:20 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. The bus leaves Pacific Central Station daily at 7:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Learn more at www.tofinobus.com/vancouver-horseshoe-bay

The strike of West Vancouver transit drivers didn’t affect the Sunshine Coast Transit service, which is under a different union.
