Thieves empty out donation bin, leave mess behind

Theft

• On March 27, staff at a business in the 5600 block of Cowrie Street, Sechelt reported a theft that occurred on March 16 at 6 a.m. The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, shows a male lifting a female into a large donation box. The female emptied out the contents and the couple sifted through everything, taking a number of items and clothing, and leaving a mess behind. The Caucasian couple appeared to be in their mid-twenties. The male is described as being approximately six feet tall and about 175 pounds. He was wearing a ball cap, jacket, and wearing a backpack. The female was approximately five feet six inches tall and about 140 pounds. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-1752.

• On March 25, at around noon, four unknown young teenage girls approached a resident in the 400 block of South Fletcher Road, Gibsons, and asked to use the bathroom. The resident agreed and all four girls went into the bathroom together, then left shortly afterward. Later that day, the resident realized a small solid silver jewelry box with a turtle design on the top was missing. Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2019-1729.

• Overnight on March 29, a suspect stole a custom-made walking stick and hat from a residence in the 8900 block of Armstrong Way, Halfmoon Bay. The hat is described as a ball cap with an eagle on it and the walking stick had a carved eagle head handle. Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference police file 2019-1807.

Prohibited Driving

• On March 26, police witnessed a westbound vehicle on Teredo Street near Trail Avenue, Sechelt, fail to stop for a pedestrian at a marked crosswalk. Police initiated a traffic stop and determined the driver was an unlicensed prohibited driver. The driver was arrested for driving while prohibited and released on a promise to appear for court. The vehicle, which was registered to someone else, was also impounded for seven days.

Found Property

• On March 27, a teen male’s wallet that had been found on a Sunshine Coast Transit bus was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference police file 2019-1759.

• On April 1, a small tablet device that had been found at the Roberts Creek Library was turned in. Owner may claim within 90 days with detailed description. Please reference RCMP file 2019-1881.

Break and Enter

• On March 28, just after 4 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of Woodland Avenue, Gibsons, heard his garage door open and when he went to investigate, found an unknown male inside. The male fled down the street and left in a van that drove away towards Harvey Road. Unfortunately, the resident was not able to get a good description of either the suspect or vehicle. The resident only noted that a garage door opener had been stolen from inside an unlocked vehicle. Police remind people to lock their vehicles and doors to deter opportunistic thieves. Mischief

• On March 29 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a resident in the 5600 block of Osprey Street, Sechelt, heard the sound of smashed glass and looked out to see an unknown person fleeing towards Sechelt Inlet Avenue, Sechelt. The resident then noted a rock had been thrown through his vehicle’s front windshield. The suspect was wearing a grey hoody and a backpack. Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 2019-1819.

Impaired Driving

• On March 30, police stopped two possible impaired drivers during a roadblock set up on Highway 101 at Largo Road, Roberts Creek. In both cases, police noted the drivers exhibiting signs of intoxication from alcohol. Both drivers were given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The drivers were each issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and their vehicles were impounded for 30 days.

• On April 1, police attended a single-vehicle incident involving a possible impaired driver in the 5600 block of Egmont Road, Egmont, after witnesses reported that the driver had driven into a rock wall and was attempting to continue driving the vehicle from the scene. Police noted the driver, who advised he’d consumed alcohol earlier in the day, was exhibiting signs of possible intoxication from alcohol. The driver was given and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The vehicle, which suffered extensive damage, had to be towed from the scene. The matter has been referred to RoadSafetyBC.

Intoxicated while in public

• On March 31, just after midnight, a suspect repeatedly kept knocking on the front door of a residence in the 4900 block of Arbutus Road, Sechelt. When police arrived at the residence, they witnessed a male trying the residence’s front door handle. Police attempted to arrest the male for break and enter, but the male fled on foot. After a short chase, the male was apprehended and taken into custody. He was issued violation tickets related to consumption and possession of alcohol and released. The file is still under investigation.
