Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating two separate reports of suspicious circumstances involving teenage girls in Sechelt on the evening of Sunday, March 20.
In the first instance, a 14-year-old girl reported that around 8:30 p.m. she had been walking through Cascade Park in the Emerson Road area of West Sechelt when someone began running towards her. The girl believed she was being chased and ran out of the park. She did not see the other person in the park, and immediately returned home.
In the second instance, a 15-year-old girl was walking through downtown Sechelt shortly after 9 p.m. when she felt she was being watched by a white male in a green Jeep. The girl saw the same Jeep parked in different locations as she walked, but she was never approached by it, and was never spoken to. The girl was able to call a family member to pick her up. After hearing about these incidents on social media, a witness reported that a green Jeep had been seen near Cascade Park earlier in the evening, although it is unknown whether it was the same Jeep reported in the second incident.
“Reports such as these are very unusual on the Sunshine Coast, where people enjoy the ability to walk safely on our streets” said Const. Harrison Mohr. “Although the circumstances are understandably concerning, we cannot confirm whether there was any criminal intent to either of them. We would ask that anyone with further information contact Sunshine Coast RCMP directly.”
Police do not have any suspects, and no further descriptions are available at this time. The public is encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and to stick to well-lit areas when walking at night. Any suspicious persons or vehicles should be reported to police immediately.
