Sunshine Coast School District 46 (SD46) has revealed who’s retiring and who’s moving next school year.

Retiring are the principal of Elphinstone Secondary School John Brisebois (17 years with SD46), district principal of Indigenous Learning Kerry Mahlman (45 years in education) and director of human resources Jim Vair (two years at SD46), who the district are sending off with “deepest appreciation and heartfelt congratulations.”

Chatelech Secondary School vice-principal Meg Chamberlin is also leaving her position to focus on educational consulting.

Moving from his position as principal at Chatelech Secondary School, Mark Sauer will take over as Elphinstone’s principal. Taking over Sauer’s position at Chatelech will be Pender Harbour Secondary School’s principal Rae-dene Pednaud.

Stepping in to helm Pender Harbour Secondary School is Patrick Kinghorn, who has most recently served as principal of alternate programs in the Kootenay-Columbia school district. Kinghorn has more than 15 years’ experience in K-12, alternate, online and French immersion programs, said the release. “He is recognized for his innovative leadership, strong community connections, and dedication to student wellness. His work has included leading restorative justice initiatives, advancing inclusive education alongside Shelley Moore, and being named a 2024 Champion by Foundry BC for his contributions to virtual student support,” said the release. “Patrick is eager to bring his passion and expertise to the thriving community of lifelong learners on the Sunshine Coast.”

Recruitment for the director of human resources and district principal of Indigenous learning is under way in a national search. Recruitment for Chatelech vice-principal is also under way with an announcement coming soon.
