Sunshine Coast RCMP’s new online crime reporting tool is now live.

RCMP said in a release that online reporting for less serious crimes will help with efficiency and collecting crime stats.

People reporting crimes will get a file number immediately, but will not be contacted by police unless investigators need more information.

The online portal can be used to report:

• Thefts of items valued at less than $5,000.

• The loss of items valued at less than $5,000.

• Vandalism of property or vehicles when the cost of the damage is less than $5,000.

• Driving complaints, as long as the incident is not in progress.

Online reports cannot be used if the crime involves the loss or theft of items involving personal identity or firearms, licence plates or decals, and if there is a witness to the incident or a suspect. Online reporting will also be limited to incidents that happened within Sunshine Coast RCMP jurisdiction.

People filing online reports will have to provide their name and address, a phone number and a valid email.

RCMP said with the new system it will take about 15 minutes to make a report.

The online reporting tool is available at: bc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/sunshinecoast/report
