RCMP on the Sunshine Coast are stepping up their response to the COVID pandemic and the detachment’s Sechelt headquarters will now be closed to the public until further notice.

The move follows an earlier decision to suspended front counter service at the Gibsons Community Police Office and the office in Madeira Park.

In a March 19 update, Sunshine Coast RCMP said, “There is an emergency phone outside that connects straight to dispatch and they will prioritize your call. If it is not an emergency and it’s during business hours, please use your cell phone and call our non-emergency number [604-885-2266].”

“We’re asking the public to try to deal with police by phone if at all possible,” Staff Sgt. Poppy Hallam told Coast Reporter earlier this week. “I’ve got lots of office staff that are answering phones and taking calls.”

RCMP office staff are working their usual hours, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and calls outside those hours will be handled by the E-Comm dispatch centre in Vancouver.
