Street ministry celebrates five years

Sechelt's only street ministry, My Father's House, is celebrating its five-year anniversary on July 21, and everyone's invited to the party.

Next Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. the Christian ministry will provide live music, food, refreshments, games, prizes and tours of their little yellow house at 5586 Wharf Ave. beside Insta Glass in Sechelt.

Although My Father's House was officially dedicated on July 6, 2008, the anniversary will be held a few weeks later on July 21 as the president, Els Mercer, is currently in Kenya on a missions trip with Mercy and Caring Children's Homes.

Vice-president Sandy Dickson spoke with Coast Reporter this week about the ministry.

My Father's House was the vision of Mercer who wanted to have a Chris-tian library of books to lend out to the community. After receiving an entire Christian library that spanned everything from children's books to self help and even romance novels, she realized that dream but knew God wanted her to do more.

So she set up My Father's House as a place to show God's love to all people, regardless of their religious background or feelings about church.

"People will come into My Father's House who say they would never go to church," Dickson said, noting their doors are open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What visitors will find when they enter, in addition to the free library, is a friendly volunteer willing to talk, listen or pray with them.

My Father's House also offers support groups for those dealing with the effects of abortion or cancer, women's seminars, coffee houses, information about social and community resources, encouragement and mentorship.

"If someone needs a friend, needs someone to listen, that's what we're here for," Dickson said.

"Really, that's what it's all about."
