Storm surge and high wind warning issued

Environment Canada

Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for the Sunshine Coast.

In a news bulletin issued just after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, Environment Canada said that strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

Another frontal system will approach Vancouver Island overnight. Southeast winds of 80 km/h will develop over exposed coastal sections of East Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast early Wednesday morning. The strong southeast winds will ease near noon Wednesday.

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

High tide on Wednesday is 15.7’ at 8:59 a.m., which could create a strong storm surge, especially in low-lying areas.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Residents are asked to monitor local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to [email protected] or tweet with the hashtag #BCStorm.
