This Davis Bay home, well known for seasonal and sports-themed decorations, had hockey sticks out for Humboldt this week as part of a nation-wide expression of mourning for the 16 people killed when the Humboldt Broncos team bus collided with a tractor-trailer on April 6.
The Town of Gibsons lowered the flag at Town Hall to half-mast for three days earlier this week and posted a message of condolence on its Facebook page.
The District of Sechelt also has its flag lowered and posted a message on its Facebook page saying it “joins all of Canada in expressing our deepest sympathies to the Humboldt Broncos families, friends and their whole community.”
The Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association, meanwhile, encouraged people to participate in Jersey Day on April 12. The idea of having Canadians wear their hockey jerseys to show support for the community of Humboldt started with a group of hockey parents on the Lower Mainland and quickly spread. They’ve been asking people to take pictures of themselves and post them on social media with the hashtag #jerseysforhumboldt.
