The Canadian Coast Guard has delivered the first of three spill response kits the agency is going to have “strategically placed” on the Sunshine Coast.
The three-metre (10-foot) shipping container will sit near the boat ramp at the Pender Harbour government wharf in Madeira Park.
According to the coast guard, the response kit includes a containment boom and absorbents, personal protective equipment and supplies for the temporary storage of oily and solid waste “ready to be deployed as quickly and as safely as possible to minimize environmental damage.”
“This equipment cache is intended for incidents involving small pleasure craft that are common to the Pender Harbour area,” coast guard communications advisor Michelle Imbeau told Coast Reporter.
“The equipment may be utilized by trained responders, who have been authorized by the Canadian Coast Guard, to limit the potential effects of a marine pollution incident.”
Imbeau said the kit will provide an initial response capability, which can be backed up by crews and additional equipment from Vancouver if needed.
