Soccer fields in the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) were reopened on Sept. 20 after being closed due to the current water restrictions.
“The recent rains have improved the condition of the fields enough to make them safely playable without the need for irrigation using potable water,” Ian Hall, general manager of planning and community development for the SCRD, said Wednesday.
Hall said playing fields were not irrigated once Stage 3 water restrictions were put in place.
“Without irrigation, fields get hard and slick and they are not safely playable,” he said. He said there is increased turf impact with dry conditions.
Field users had been directed to use all-weather fields such as Maryanne West Park in Elphinstone and the soccer field in Pender Harbour while the closures were in place.
“Field users have been informed that fields may need to be closed again if dry weather continues and outdoor water restrictions remain in effect,” he said.
