School District 46 (SD46) has cancelled school for the southern section of the Lower Sunshine Coast after a fresh sheet of snow fell in some areas of the Coast overnight.

School is cancelled for Roberts Creek Elementary, Cedar Grove Elementary, Elphinstone Secondary, Heritage Building, Gibsons Elementary and Langdale Elementary.

SD46 had previously announced a two hour delay to the start of the school day because of inclement weather. "The 2 hour delay allowed us some time to assess and consider further decisions," said a notice from the district. "What made the call so difficult today was that the upper coast had minimal snow, while Roberts Creek to Langdale had significant snow and is still snowing, despite prediction from radar that it would lift by 8:30am."

School buses did not run Tuesday morning.

Snowfall warning

An Environment Canada snowfall warning is effect for the Sunshine Coast region, mainly over higher elevations, as a low-pressure centre moves across the South Coast.

The warning says total amounts of five to 10 cm are expected by midday with rapidly accumulating snow, difficult driving conditions and reduced visibility.

Transit

BC Transit buses are also facing route challenges because of the snow. According to alerts as of 10:40 a.m.:

  • Route 4 Halfmoon Bay has been cancelled until further notice because of unfavourable road conditions

  • Routes 1 and 90: No service between Marine Drive and Stewart Road (North rd 90 Express will be acessing the Langdale Terminal Via the bypass)

Thousands in the southern section of the Coast also woke up without power. According to the BC Hydro Outage Map, 2,934 customers were without power in Roberts Creek from about 4:30 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m.

In Gibsons and Elphinstone, the power went out for 2,904 customers at 7 a.m. but as of 10 a.m. the number of customers affected by outages in the area has decreased to just under 1,200.
