NDP MLA Nicholas Simons is welcoming new child care funding for the shíshálh Nation, and the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society.

The two organizations are among 83 across the province getting a share of the $30 million being made available through the B.C. government’s Early Learning and Child Care agreement with the federal government.

“For too long service providers on the Sunshine Coast have had difficulty providing the necessary support for children with extra support needs,” said Simons in a release. “This new provincial and federal funding will go a long way in ensuring that families on the Coast have better access to quality care for their children.”

The government did not release the value of the individual grants.

The funding from the provincial-federal agreement was first announced in February and is being rolled out over the next three years to expand and enhance the province’s Supported Child Development and Aboriginal Supported Child Development programs.
