As the province announced funding for emergency preparedness for 38 communities on Aug. 20, two lower Sunshine Coast governments made the list.

The Sechelt Indian Government District (SIGD) is slated to receive $150,000 for flood risk assessment and mapping while the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) will get $143,000 for dam breach analysis.

On the upper Sunshine Coast, qathet Regional District has been approved for $130,350 to go toward the region’s coastal flood adaptation strategy.

The latest round of the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) is providing a total of $5.1 million to successful applicants for preventing, eliminating or reducing potential hazards through flood planning. The $77-million fund is to help enhance the resiliency of First Nations, local governments and residents, and has helped 961 projects since 2017.

“This program is vital in helping communities prepare for local emergencies, such as floods and wildfires,” Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, said in a press release.

“These funds have supported emergency operations centres, emergency support services, mitigation projects, response training and cultural humility training so that First Nations and local governments can better get ahead of what might come.”
