The Sechelt Indian Band (SIB) is not yet ready to divulge the identity of the new tenant on the band’s property across from McDonald’s Restaurant in Sechelt.
“Things are pending,” Chief Calvin Craigan told Coast Reporter this week. “There will be an official announcement probably early in the new year. That’s all I can tell you.”
The property in question is along Highway 101 between the Sechelt (shíshálh) Hospital and the Lighthouse Liquor Store. The site was cleared of debris and asphalt in September 2016.
In December the SIB gifted the old employment centre, which is the last remaining building on the site, to the Sunshine Coast Homeless Advisory Council (SCHAC) to use as a shelter, provided the building can be relocated before February.
The end of January deadline is necessary because “the new tenant for that property on band lands moves in in February,” so the area must be cleared, according to Cayce Laviolette of SCHAC, which is working to secure land and moving costs for the gifted building.
