A newly-installed solar array on the roof of the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre is set for official launch.
The 28-panel solar array was installed in memory of James Pawley, who died last year and was an active board member of the Sunshine Coast Community Solar Association (SCCSA) as well as an advocate on climate change and alternative energy. He had wished to see a community solar array installed in Sechelt.
A legacy fund in Pawley’s name is contributing to the installation. Both the seniors centre and the association “worked closely” on the project, according to a release.
The release says a monitoring plan is expected to be installed in the foyer of the centre, “so people can readily view how much power the panels are producing in real time.”
The SCCSA expressed gratitude to the Pawley family “for their generosity in making this community solar array possible as well as to the many friends and acquaintances of Jim’s, far and wide, who donated. A grant from the Sunshine Coast Credit Union was greatly appreciated and Olson Electric/APS has worked hard to offer the best possible installation for the money donated.”
The event takes place at the centre at 5604 Trail Ave. in Sechelt on March 17 at 1:30 p.m., and will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. Dr. Christine Pawley, who is Jim’s widow, and their daughter, Dr. Alice Pawley, will host the event along with the solar association and seniors activity centre. A reception with refreshments will follow.
