Sechelt settles with former employee

Local Government

The District of Sechelt and former director of corporate services Margi Nicholas have reached an out-of-court settlement of Nicholas’ 2015 lawsuit against the district.

A joint press release issued Dec. 19 says, “The District of Sechelt and Margi Nicholas have come to an amicable resolution of the legal proceedings brought by Ms. Nicholas as a result of the district’s without cause termination of Ms. Nicholas’ employment as its director of corporate services.”

The statement goes on to note that Nicholas had “consistently received positive performance evaluations from her supervisors throughout her over six years as a district employee… It was council’s implementation of recommendations from a third party organizational structural review that resulted in the elimination of Ms. Nicholas’ position.”

Nicholas’ suit alleged the district owed her thousands of dollars in unpaid bonuses and other compensation, and that she had been subjected to bullying by some elected officials.

The district’s statement of defence, filed in late 2015, denied all the allegations and claimed Nicholas had not only been paid a large severance, but that she had received bonuses and a raise through Sechelt’s previous top administrator without council authorization.

The Dec. 19 joint press release said, “The parties are pleased to have resolved the matter, and the district wishes Ms. Nicholas all the best in her future endeavours.”
