The District of Sechelt has just been given a level two Climate Action Award for completing a corporate carbon inventory in 2012.
The award is for "measurement" and it's the second in a three level award system that tracks the progress of local governments signed on to the B.C. Climate Action Charter.
Sechelt was one of 180 municipalities that signed the charter in 2011, joining the province and the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) in committing to become carbon neutral.
Signatories also pledged to create "complete, compact, energy-efficient communities."
The three-tier Climate Action Award program was set up by the province and UBCM through their Green Communities Committee. Level one is achieved when local governments can prove some progress on their charter commitments. The achievement is honoured with a letter of recognition.
Once municipalities have completed an extensive carbon inventory they receive level two recognition, which allows use of a Climate Action 2012 logo on websites and communications.
Level three is awarded when local governments achieve carbon neutrality. The award is a Climate Action Community-Carbon Neutral 2012 logo for the municipality's use.
