The pilot program that allowed street patios at businesses in Sechelt will now become a continuing program.

The patios were first introduced in 2020 to accommodate social distancing requirements during the pandemic, then the program was extended.

Staff said the patios were well used and popular, and created “an increased sense of vibrancy in our downtown core.”

While uptake was low — two were installed in 2020 and two in 2021, but more on private property — staff said some businesses may be more likely to invest in a patio if they know it will continue on a permanent basis. Sechelt staff proposed the same process would be used.

At its Sept. 7 meeting, District of Sechelt council unanimously endorsed continuing the program with a $50 application fee.
