Salish Soils sub-lease

Councillors in Sechelt have approved an extension of Salish Soils’ lease on property on Dusty Road that it uses for composting biosolids.

The lease on the land needed to be extended to match the term of the composting contract. There’s no change to the lease payments, which are $750 per month.

The extension passed unanimously, but Mayor Bruce Milne asked for assurances from staff that the extension would not slow down the search for a new, permanent site for the biosolids composting facility. “Does staff know if there are serious efforts being made to find a permanent site for this?” Milne asked.

Corporate officer Jo-Anne Frank said there are “active discussions” between the district and the company.

Airbnb and short-term rentals

Mayor Milne said Sechelt isn’t waiting for the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to lead the way on a strategy for short-term rentals, but council does want to see what comes out of the regional district’s public consultations.

Milne made the comments in response to public questions at the July 5 council meeting, where some Tuwanek residents raised concerns about vacation rentals.

“It is something that we have on our radar. It’s something we are watching the SCRD on, hoping that our staff can collaborate with their staff as that proceeds. I would expect that we will see something come forward in the next few months and over the winter,” said Milne.

The  SCRD’s consultation, including an online survey, runs until Aug. 15.
