Métis Day
Sechelt Council has declared Nov. 16 as Métis Day and pledged to fly the Métis flag at municipal hall to mark the occasion.
The date is linked to the Nov. 16, 1885 execution of Métis leader Louis Riel.
Mayor Bruce Milne invited the community to take part in a short flag raising ceremony at noon.
Graphic art studio
Four Sechelt councillors had their first look at development plans for a two-storey dance studio and climbing wall proposed for 5590 Wharf Ave. during the Oct. 26 planning and community development committee meeting.
The building is slated to go in between Insta Glass and Custom Carpet and would result in the removal of Elite Fire Protection.
The site is currently zoned C-2 with an official community plan designation of downtown centre, so the proposal by Waldorf Bros. Graphic Art Studio could go forward without any zoning or OCP amendment needed.
Committee members Darnelda Siegers, Mike Shanks, Alice Lutes and Noel Muller recommended that council approve the development permit and secure a $6,365 landscaping bond to be held for two years to ensure plant survival.
Council upheld that resolution on Nov. 2, during its regular council meeting.
New RTC
RTC Properties was before the planning committee on Oct. 26 with a development permit application for Phase 4 of the Blue Northern project, which is separate from the Sechelt waterfront proposal the company put forward in August.
The Blue Northern project is a townhouse building project at 5778 Marine Way that had a previous development permit issued in 2011, but the building was never completed.
Now RTC Properties wants to make some small changes to the development, which requires a new development permit. The changes include an increase in the number of units from five to nine and the addition of an exterior elevator.
The committee recommended approval of the development permit as long as all works conform to the recommendations of a geotechnical investigation and riparian area assessment that were submitted to the district.
Council approved committee’s recommendation on Nov. 2.
