Pot regulations
The District of Sechelt has made little headway on investigating ways to potentially regulate the sale and distribution of marijuana in Sechelt.
Staff was asked to look into zoning and business licence options to regulate sale and supply of marijuana back in April, but Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne said staff hasn’t gotten very far.
“Unfortunately it hasn’t been the highest priority over the summer because of other issues that keep emerging, and so I’m not sure when that report will come forward,” Milne said.
He noted council is still hoping the federal government will “steady the landscape” soon so the task of regulation will be easier.
Regardless, Milne said, “we are still wanting to find the appropriate way to license legal businesses and prevent less legal businesses from operating, and that hasn’t changed over the last six months.”
There are currently three medical marijuana dispensaries operating in downtown Sechelt.
Corporate officer
The District of Sechelt was close to hiring a new corporate officer but their star candidate found out she had cancer just before being offered the job, so she declined the offer.
Finding no one else suitable who could take the position, the district re-advertised the job and Milne hopes to have someone in place soon.
CAO
Sechelt has hired senior management search consultant Grant Smith to help secure a new chief administrative officer for the municipality and Milne expects the position to be advertised shortly after Labour Day.
“We’re also asking everybody who has contacts in local government across Canada to help us on that to make sure we really can look for the best candidates,” Milne said.
Smoking bylaw
The district is seeking public input for a new smoking control bylaw that will be considered in the coming months.
Sechelt residents are invited to complete an online survey at www.sechelt.ca to give their feedback before Sept. 15.
The survey takes about one minute to complete and asks questions about where smoking should be allowed and what types of smoking should be regulated.
Copies are also available at the district office for those who don’t have access to a computer.
Free workshops
The district is once again offering free business workshops through Innovation Island from Sept. 21 to 22 at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt.
The workshops will focus on relationship building, proper business scaling and how to “future proof” businesses through technology.
