The District of Sechelt says it will keep the barricades on Gale Avenue North and Seawatch Lane in place. Warning signs are also up telling pedestrians not to enter the area, effectively blocking all access to the Seawatch neighbourhood.
According to the district, an investigation of the most recent sinkhole in the area by Thurber Engineering “confirmed that Seawatch Lane has been undermined and the thickness of the remaining crust may not be sufficient to support ongoing use.”
The district also said staff have been in contact with MLA Nicholas Simons and the Minister of Public Safety to explore possible assistance for Seawatch residents, “but have yet to receive a favourable response.”
“We are trying to facilitate a meeting, as soon as possible, for residents with our insurance providers, Thurber Engineering and representative from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General so residents will have the information they need to make their own decisions,” said Mayor Darnelda Siegers.
