Rainy season is almost here and Coast residents are getting some incentives from the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to collect the stuff that falls from the sky.

Starting Nov. 1 at 8:30 a.m., the SCRD will open its rainwater harvesting rebate program, which will give property owners with an SCRD water utilities account a rebate of up to $500 towards the purchase of a rainwater storage cistern with a minimum storage volume of 4,500 litres, according to a release.

Raph Shay of Infrastructure Services at the SCRD, recommends purchasing large cisterns. “Summer precipitation patterns on the Sunshine Coast are such that rainwater harvesting requires a large storage capacity in order to be impactful,” he said.

Collected rainwater is not subject to outdoor water restrictions.

Rebates will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis and pre-approval application forms will be accepted until Dec. 14, or until funds are used up. For more information, visit www.scrd.ca/rainwater or call 604-885-6806.
