British Columbians will celebrate Family Day this Monday, Feb. 9 with free activities offered by the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).
This will be B.C.’s third Family Day since the creation of the statutory holiday in 2013. It is a fantastic opportunity for families to get out and be active together.
“Spending time together allows families to take time out of their busy schedules to be healthy, to laugh, to connect, to play and to explore the beautiful Sunshine Coast,” said SCRD recreation program coordinator Adrianne Gadd.
The SCRD is offering the following free activities on Family Day: public swimming at the Gibsons and District Aquatic Facility from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre from 1 to 5 p.m., and at the Pender Harbour Aquatic and Fitness Centre from 1 to 4 p.m.
Free public skating will take place at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m.
The YMCA is also providing a day of outdoor fun for your family at Camp Elphinstone from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Sunshine Coast also has a wide array of beautiful parks and trails and beaches to explore and discover.
The active communities committee on the Sunshine Coast is also supportive of active families and is taking steps to encourage parents to get out and play with their children. The committee is made up of members from the Vancouver Coastal Health, School District No. 46, SCRD, YMCA, small business owners and parents, with the common goal to encourage Sunshine Coast residents to be more active.
“Family Day is a wonderful holiday to start a new family tradition of being active and playing together with numerous events and opportunities available for families on the Sunshine Coast,” said SCRD board chair Garry Nohr.
