Tetrahedron Park second open house
BC Parks will be hosting a second open house to gather input from the public on possible changes to Tetrahedron Provincial Park that would allow the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to move forward with the Chapman drawdown project.
The meeting is slated for Thursday, May 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Roberts Creek Community Hall.
Tetrahedron Provincial Park is home to Chapman Lake, which feeds the Chapman water system supplying 85 per cent of water users on the Coast. The SCRD has applied to amend its park use permit so that it can build permanent infrastructure that would allow more water to be drawn from the lake.
The public is invited to provide input to BC Parks until June 8, 2018.
Elphinstone Crossing Estates public hearing
The public will have another opportunity to weigh in on the Elphinstone Crossing Estates, a subdivision development underway in West Howe Sound. Pending board approval, a public hearing will be held June 12 at Eric Cardinal Hall at 7 p.m.
The purpose of the hearing is to provide an opportunity for the public to comment on a zoning bylaw amendment that will allow the development to become “density neutral” by creating a combination of smaller and two larger lots, which will be prevented from being subdivided in the future by a registered covenant.
Developers have agreed to a “density exchange,” which involves the creation of a picnic area near the intersection of Cascadia Parkway and Storvold, as well as the construction of a trail that leads to the flank of Mount Elphinstone. The property is outside of the regional fire protection zone, putting responsibility on property owners.
Ian Winn, West Howe Sound director, supported the project moving forward, but noted the lack of services, including fire protection, garbage pickup and water, in what he called a “rural nature development.”
“These are important things, but the other thing that’s really important is that there is no plan for transit expansion in that area for many years to come, so in trying to balance the need for affordable housing and increase density in that regard, we need a lot more of the services,” said Winn.
