Catchment Areas

School District No. 46 (SD46) will be reviewing catchment areas to address overcrowding at schools.

At the board of education meeting on Nov. 8, secretary treasurer Nicholas Weswick said changes to class size and composition have resulted in portables being added to West Sechelt and Cedar Grove elementary schools to provide additional class space. As well, several elementary schools are now closed to cross-boundary applications including: Gibsons, Davis Bay, West Sechelt and Cedar Grove.

The board’s operations committee met in mid-October and discussed adjusting catchment boundaries at Gibsons, Halfmoon Bay and Davis Bay elementary schools in an effort to shift incoming students to neighbouring schools with excess capacity.

Passenger Vans

Weswick also informed trustees that the school district’s 15-passenger vans have been taken out of commission and replaced with new multi-function buses. “These activity buses greatly improve overall safety for staff, students and volunteers, but come with some added expenses,” he said.
