Strategic plan

At their last board meeting of the school year, the School District No. 46 (SD46) board adopted their strategic plan, which will be available in print in the fall.

Some small changes were made to the document after feedback from the public.

The final plan puts forward goals such as helping students excel in all areas, creating safe and healthy schools where everyone feels respected, and pursuing more opportunities for collaboration in the community.

Student trustee

Student Trustee Kailyn Pritchard gave an emotional goodbye speech on June 9, during her last school board meeting as a trustee.

“It’s been an amazing year and I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to take on this position and work with all of you. It’s been an honour and a privilege and I can’t believe it’s already over,” she said.

“I have loved every minute of this role.”

Pritchard was given a standing ovation by the board.

A new student trustee will be chosen in the coming school year.

Frances Fleming

The Frances Fleming award has come to a close after five years of honouring individuals for their inspirational achievements.

“The Fleming family is now enacting the sunset clause and requests that we bring closure to the use of their mother’s name now that the school district has completed the five-year cycle of the award,” a press release from SD46 stated.

Over the past five years the award has honoured Debbie Amaral, Mary Ann Darney, Donna Joe, Sue Lamb and Steve Sleep.

New curriculum

SD46 is getting ready for the new curriculum being developed by the province with the help of teacher David Barnum, who is educating himself on the changes and has created a poster explaining them, which has been requested for use by the province.

The new curriculum is focused more on the way teachers teach and children learn rather than new courses, although there is a new portion on Aboriginal culture that will be included.

“The Aboriginal perspective will be woven throughout so that at any point in the curriculum we can look at that perspective,” SD46 board chair Betty Baxter said.

The new curriculum will be focused on personalized learning and notes the need to develop social and emotional learning in students, which is something SD46 is already doing.

“Through community schools and particular teachers, our district has been at least two or three years ahead of everybody on social emotional learning,” Baxter said.

“I give credit to teachers and principals who have said ‘let’s get ahead of the curve’ because we seem to be.”
