Coast Guard crews and a private salvage company were back in Gerrans Bay this week, after a boat that sank and was refloated sank again.
Spill containment booms were placed around the San Jolyne III after it sank on Oct. 19, and Coast Guard officials told Coast Reporter they were working with the owner and other agencies to recover the vessel.
The boat was raised by the owner Oct. 26, only to sink again on Oct. 30.
According to the Coast Guard, a salvage company was on site Oct. 31 to raise the vessel and transport it to Shelter Island to prevent further contamination of the marine environment.
“Containment booms, encompassing all vessels and area in the vicinity of the vessel, continue to restrict the spread of any marine pollution,” Coast Guard’s statement to Coast Reporter said. “A sheen remains on the water but is not recoverable… The Canadian Coast Guard’s environmental response team is arranging for the removal of hydrocarbons and oil from the vessel before transport [and] will remain on site to monitor for pollution and oversee the activity.”
