RTC undergoes major changes

Sechelt Waterfront

The RTC development pitched for Sechelt’s waterfront has undergone a major transformation.

After receiving feedback from the public, developers decided to lower the height to 13.5 metres from 20.5 metres and lower the maximum number of units from 48 to 31. RTC also set a maximum building width for their property at 45 metres.

“This was done to alleviate the concerns that it would create a wall blocking the oceanfront, so it would have massing broken up,” planner Aaron Thompson told council on Aug. 2, when the revised proposal was presented.

RTC also made some changes to its community amenity contributions, upping the number of affordable housing units included from one to two, and committing to a detailed 1,597-square-metre Snickett Park expansion.

RTC will also build a beach access from Camden Road and construct half of the building’s units to accessible standards in the new plan.

Council was pleased with the changes proposed by RTC and gave the new plan first reading.

It will now go to a public hearing, which is yet to be scheduled, for more public input.
